Mariner's Chapel
In the early nineteenth century the docks were closed on Sundays but the sailors were unable to worship in the city churches as their clothing was considered inappropriate.
This led to a number of the dock’s merchants providing a church specifically for visiting sailors via public subscription.
The Mariners’ Chapel opened its doors in 1849, when it also became very popular with the citizens of Gloucester for a time!
The church is still in use today and holds regular services for worshippers from different parts of the city.
