Eastgate & City Wall
The East Gate was built in the late 60’s AD using a clay and turf rampart topped with a wooden palisade.
By the end of the first century, as the town began to thrive and achieved higher status in the Roman Empire, the walls were rebuilt in stone.
Defensive towers were added in the thirteenth century along with a moat and a new drawbridge.
The strategic importance of the gate decreased over time and by 1584, the north tower became a women’s prison whilst the south tower was rebuilt as a stone-lined pool for washing horses and carts.
A surviving section of the Roman city wall can be viewed here and tours can be booked from the Gloucester City Museum & Art Gallery (around the corner on Brunswick Road).
