Shire Hall
The portico to the Gloucestershire County Council building was designed in 1816.
The Ionic columns are a prime example of the Greek Revivalist style by one of its leading lights, Robert Smirke. It was based on an ancient temple on the banks of the River Illissus in Greece.
The Cheltenham-born Smirke went on to design the main block and frontage of the British Museum.
