King Edwards Gate
Built in the thirteenth century with financial help from King Edward I, the gateway to the Cathedral precinct was where Abbot Thokey received the remains of King Edward II in 1327. The stone shield is said to display the arms of Osric, King of the Hwicce and founder of St Peter's Abbey (the former name of the Cathedral).

King Edward’s Gate is named after Edward I. It is said that was also the inspiration for the nursery rhyme Doctor Foster went to Gloucester
'Doctor Foster went to Gloucester in a shower of Rain. He stepped in a puddle, right up to his middle and never went there again.'
The story goes that when King Edward I visited the city to proclaim the Statute of Gloucester (which declared that business could only be conducted with royal permission – effectively a new tax), his horse became stuck in the mud. Ever ready to see the funny side, Gloucester folk gathered to enjoy the free entertainment, as the King of England wallowed about in the mire. His majesty however, did not share the joke, and consequently vowed never to return to the city.
