St Michael's Tower
The tower was once part of St Michael the Archangel (the earliest records of its existence are from the twelfth century).
The tower was built around 1465 and its bells were rung to signal the curfew imposed on citizens to extinguish their home fires overnight. This was especially important as most of the city’s buildings were made from timber.
Parts of the church were pulled down in 1849 to allow EastgateStreet to be widened.
The church was closed for good in 1940 following unification with the parish of St Mary de Crypt.
St Michael’s Tower is now the headquarters of Gloucester Civic Trust, who run a range of guided tours and champion the history and heritage of the city.
