Robert Raikes House
Robert Raikes House stands proud in Southgate Street, this 16th century timber-framed building has been extensively and lovingly restored.
Best known as the family home of one Robert Raikes, the house was the eighteenth century offices of the Gloucester Journal (now known as ‘The Citizen’, the city’s daily newspaper).
Raikes went on to found the Sunday School movement, the forerunner to the English state school system.
The magnificent timber-framed merchants-house was bought by Samuel Smiths the brewer, who restored it at a reported cost of £4.5m, and opened as Robert Raikes’ House in November 2008. The restoration is exceptional, and was a worthy winner of a recent Heritage Champion award.
